Archery: Calculate 1m-Sight from coarse datapoints

Post by Orngrimm »

Long, LOOOONG time in th works and updated many times...
Now with this forum here, i yould like to share this Excel-Sheet with you.

Back in the older day, i was not only shooting target-archery but also 3D and field.

There, you also have to guess the distances and set your sight accordingly.
A 1m-resolution on the sight is not really a HAVE TO but a SHOULD HAVE.

Back in the days when i started, we shot ervery 5 or 10m and guessed the in-betweens linearly... As an egnineer, this bugged me a LOT. Guessing! Pha! Who are we! And a ballistic curve is never linear...

Of yourse, sighting every 1m is a huuuge pain in the behind and not feasible.
A better solution had to be made.
Welcome to the birth-hour of this excel.

With many hours of tinkering and method-evaluation i managed to build a sheet in which you can shoot only a few (8 or 9) distances and you get freom 2m to 100m every meter on your sight.
In theory, if you know your turning-point, you could go with 2 datapoints less, but this proved to be utopic for many archers: They didnt know it and had to find it, which used more than those 2 additional points in the first place.

The endresult was a excel-sheet which helped me get top-10 in Worldchampionships IFAA and 3rd place in the IFAA European Champs.

Well then!
Find below the Excel-sheet. If you have questions, ideas, inputs and comments, well... We are a forum here. Ask ahead! :)

Happy shooting in Field and on the FOP!

If I ever though what little I did with bow and arrow was complex and a bit hard to learn.....
I see you are clearly on a level I would not have dreamt of during my best times LOL

I onder when someone will come up with an A.I. guided bow and arrow system.
Like:
Sensors in the arrow detect reuired angles, sensors in the bow the power and so on.
And a digital sight provides the exact point to aim for based on a range finder integrated and what the A.I. comes up with....
Would take the fun out of the game though....
Exploring the works of the old inventors, mixng them up with a modern touch.
To tinker and create means to be alive.
Bringing the long lost back means history comes alive again.

Getting 8th in europeans individual, 9th in mixed team, top 50 worldranking, many MANY times swiss champuion, holder of many records and only swiss to enter the WorldChamps comes with a certain level of ... dedication ;)
Hitting a 9 @ 70m? meh... OK but not good. 10 @ 70m? Usable if many others are following. The 10 is the size of a DVD by the way... (12cm)

Boy, are you in for a surprise:
Of course, the distances are super short and so on...

I just wish we would have met when I was younger ...
Always like archery but my parents never stayed in one place long enough to let me enjoy it and later I just gave up it.
When I went to AU I even had to leave my rifles and other guns behind.
All fully legal in DE and for the rest I had the required permits but none if mattered or matched the AU regulations LOL
Down here you are not even allowed to have a BB gun unless you are a memebr of some club or such - and then you often are required to store the things on the clubs premises LOL
You can legally buy a high powered compund bow but not something like would use when not even about competing.
Using one or having one though is a different story.
For that you need at least a hunting permit.
Those you might get through a gun club - but not if you don't use a gun ROFL
You can also get a permit for a farmer or such to hunt pest animals like foxes or rabbits, in some cases even roos.
But of course the permit requires you to state the weapon(s) you will use for hunting - including their registered serial numbers.
Most cross bows won't come with a serial number, let alone registration option and so you can't get a hunting permit for them.

Real archery though is a different story.
Club memebers can have every bow they would like and can order or buy somewhere.
But unless their PRIVATE property is classed rural and mot residential they again won't be able to use their bow at home.
Needless to say a bow and arrows are treated like real guns here.
Securely stored and with ALL strigns you might have locked up to make misuse impossible...
Back in DE we were shooting everything from our airpistols and rifles to shotguns, Winchesters and some high powered rifles in the cellar - right next to the tiny "home bar with beer on tap" LOL
We required a new 20cm thick solid oak block about once a month....
And around it for those unfortunate mishaps we had a few layers of old felt blankets covering 4 rows of firewood...
Only downside was having some molten lead in the woodfire oven every now and then.
Sometimes I still those days....

Especially i tip my hat to those quite few people who use this Excel for their Sight-calculation in preparation. I am honored you place this trust into my expertise.
